It is worth acknowledging that students join us on the BATD with an incredible breadth of skills, this post profiles one of our newest recruits – Victoria Pemberton, who joined us in semester 2, 2016.

Vic is the designer behind the homewares label Bind | Fold. Vic uses traditional techniques and natural indigo to dye her small range of bedding and kitchen textiles available through Etsy. In her spare time, she knits – A lot! Vic has very generously offered RMIT fashion and textiles students 15% off any workshop bookings – valid until the end of February 2017. Students can register on the website Bind | Fold using the code ILOVERMIT. Students will need to present their student card at the start of workshops.

We asked Vic to answer a few questions about why she decided to embark on a three year BA textile design degree at RMIT.

Tell me a little bit about your background – how did you come to textiles and where has it led you?

I’ve always been interested in visual arts, and studied photography at SCA just out of high school in the late 90’s. I didn’t pursue a creative career and ended up working in IT until 2010 – when I finished work to start a family. It was when I was at home with a newborn that I really returned to being creative. I taught myself how to sew and knit, and wanted to design my own printed textiles, but somehow started out dyeing fabric first! One thing led to another and I started my own label called Bind | Fold where I work mostly with natural indigo to create homewares and accessories using different surface design techniques.

What led you to study textile design at RMIT?

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a few past students and their work was always incredibly impressive, so I knew I had to come to RMIT and do the BATD myself. Ever since I heard I could get a degree in knitting it’s been on my mind, and with my son now at school, I thought “why not?”

What is your career dream or goal when you graduate?

It’s really hard to say! There are just so many things I am interested in. I’d love to design over the top knitwear, as well as everyday knitwear, but I quite like the idea of working in costume design too! I’m also quite keen to see the Australian textile industry return to manufacturing at home too, so working with companies to get that happening would be interesting, and no doubt rewarding.

What role do you think design will play in the future? What are its potentials and its challenges?

I think textile design has the potential to change lives, both on a personal and a social level. We (as designers) have a responsibility to seek out and / or establish ethical supply chains that work within the planet’s finite resources. Understanding where a fabric has come from; where it was grown etc., is in my mind, a really important step towards the sustainable and ethical production of all textiles.

Today, we proudly feature on the blog another of our fabulous alumni who’s going from strength to strength (even The Design Files agrees!) – we’re profiling Edith Barrett.

Textile Designer Edith Barrett – all images courtesy the designer

Previously featured on the blog whilst still a student for her Pinkey Square collaborations and other extra curricular activities, Edith has certainly carved out a niche for herself in the couple of years since she officially joined the Australian textile and fashion industry. Joining the team at Longina Phillips in Sydney soon after graduating in 2013, Edith has managed to balance her individual creative practice with the demands of working in one of the industry’s most prolific and high profile studios.

Edith very kindly took time out from an increasingly busy schedule to share her story with us:

Textile designer, Illustrator and fossicker. Stirred by all things botanical and Australian. Sydney based, with one toe in Hobart and the other in Melbourne.

What is your current role?

I am currently a Textile Designer at Sydney print design studio, Longina Phillips. I have also been working on some personal design projects outside of work also including a new range of silk headscarves, Fossick. A project that developed from collecting and sketching in the Blue Mountains and Sydney surrounds to create little wearable head museums!

Tell me a little bit about your background – how did you come to textiles and where has it led you?

I have had an interest in the natural world, collecting and drawing specimens from when I was a little tacker. Excited by the new life and purpose illustrations have when transferred to fabric I studied Textile Design at RMIT in Melbourne, majoring in screen printed textiles. I travelled to Estonia for a study exchange where I completed hands-on field studies at the EKA Art Academy. Secluded in an unfamiliar and exciting new world, I had more time and greater freedom to explore my own style there. Post- graduation I moved to Sydney to work at Longina Phillips and relished weekend opportunities to scout the abundance of new flora for me around Sydney.

What does a typical working day involve?

Part one, a bike ride to work, painting/drawing/designing textile prints at Longina, a ride home. Part two, a night of drawing and pottering on personal projects at home with jazz in my ears and mint slice in easy reach!

Are there particular artists or designers you admire? What is it about them that you admire?

A huge point of inspiration for me is the intrepid paintings and etchings commissioned by explorers and naturalists way back in the day. I have always been drawn to cabinets of curiosities and the more scientific side of botanical illustrations – The life work and dedication of Margeret Flockton, Marianne North and the vast collections of Albertus Seba. I also admire people that are still alive! The work of Sydney artist Caitlin Shearer, banksia veteran Celia Rosser and Russian designer Lesia Paramonova.

How do you stay inspired?

I am constantly inspired, its more having the time to get all my bits and pieces out of my head and into something real. Physical place is what inspires me the most, and a change in scene or a landscape full of new treats to draw always gets my pen twitching!

What are you looking forward to?

There are lots of exciting collaborations on the way. I am teaming up with an talented bunch of textile designers mostly RMIT graduates also, for an exhibition called Sans Souci – An abstract and humorous reimagining of classic travel souvenirs & iconic Australian products. I am also looking forward to a project with emerging label Collie Park Design, Club of Odd Volumes and to finalizing the installation some Australiana wallpapers I have designed. And then…more explorations prints, scarves, and hopefully, some time to work on building The Bush Museum.

I’m a textile designer drawn to the wild elements of nature, the mystical tales of flowers and the lifestyle of a bohemian gypsy. Growing up in Northern NSW in a surfing family I was surrounded by art, music and beach culture, this is where is first found my passion for creativity and design.

I first studied design at North Coast TAFE and realized my passion for textiles, which led me to RMIT and my move to Melbourne to make my love of painting and drawing a career. I actually fell in love with knitting and majored in knit instead of print. I did my work placement in Sydney with Romance was Born who I absolutely love and still keep in contact with, while I was there I knitted a shaggy jumper for their Winter 2012 collection.

Working for Karolina York taught me a lot about the fashion industry and they really helped adapt my skills into the real world of textile design. I also lived in Los Angeles for 3 months and worked in the Karolina York LA print studio….LA is fantastic! I have now branched out and I’m currently working as a freelance textile designer….and loving every minuet of it.

Another amazing creative that just caught my eye is Byron based artist Jai Vasicek ….I would love any of his artwork for my house – its a mix of loud colours, collage, pom poms and tassels.

I think seeing my print on the catwalk at New York fashion week was a huge highlight. I still love the fact that I can walk down the street and see someone wearing one of my prints.
Staying inspired is easy with a world of design at your finger tips….people always say how do you get inspired and keep coming up with all these designs and I tell them that’s the simple part, its TIME that is always the issue….not enough hours in the day. The biggest thing that keeps me constantly inspired is instagram, there are millions of amazing blogs out there too and I have also just become seriously addicted to pinterest.

My career dream was something along the lines of what I’m doing now…I always wanted to be a freelancer. I love the fact that everyday is different, that I can take on everything that is thrown my way. One day I’m designing for a men’s street wear label from my beach side apartment, the next day I’m off to a big fashion studio to discuss a design brief. I still think there is more to achieve in my career, I miss being surrounded by amazing creative individuals everyday. I’d like to work in a shared design space when I get sick of my little creative studio by the beach…who knows I might be offered that dream job tomorrow!

Tanya had a taste of the commercial world whilst still studying, taking a year out in 2011 to undertake a colour and trim design assistant role as part of the cooperative program at GM Holden Colour & Trim. Not content to rest on her laurels, in her final year Tanya took on two additional internships with Megan Park and Ink & Spindle, rounding up her experience at H.A.G.

What is your current role?

At the start of the year I moved to Sydney to accept a role with a custom rugs and carpet design studio working full time as a design consultant. My role includes designing carpets and rugs (of course!) but I’m also heavily involved in project management, marketing and business development.

How do you define your style?

This might sound bizarre but I don’t think I have a signature style. When designing for clients you have to let go of what you want and focus purely on their aesthetic. But if I were to be given free reign to design anything…I think it would involve a lot of indigo and saffron hues and more likely than not a hint of Indian motif and pattern design.
What does a typical working day involve?

One of the main reasons I took this job was because there was never going to be a typical day and that’s exactly how it is. My week often includes, plenty of emails, generating design work and meticulous spec sheets, meetings with clients (latte’s and lunches are all part of the job!), coordinating logistics, installations, marketing and business development
What are the rewards of your job/work?

So far its been a huge learning experience but I’ve quite naturally slipped into the consultancy and client facing nature of the role and I love that I get to take projects through from the concept stage right through to installation of the product in the space.

Working mainly with architects and interior designers is quite inspiring and it’s great when people from different design disciplines work together and achieve such great project outcomes. I also have fabulous colleagues and directors who are a heap of fun to work with but also very motivating and inspiring from a professional perspective.

How do you stay inspired?

The Internet is a necessary evil when it comes to staying inspired. I can’t go past a good blog, designer interview or my daily dose of ‘pinteresting’! When I’m out and about I more often than not (much to the surprise of city folk) stop in the middle of a street to take a quick iPhone photo of an interesting texture, colour or bit of graffiti text I might come across!

What did you take out of your Textile Design training?

I owe majority of my professional success to my textile design training and RMIT Textile Design (proud plug!). Apart from learning technical textile design skills, the course has developed within me a sense of professional discipline. Whether it be mundane things like file management or more nerve racking things like presentation skills, I often find myself reflecting back to how I did things at uni to help me stay sane, organized and efficient at work.

Find Tanya at Korda Design or the studio blog
Follow Maxwell & Williams on Facebook

Our Alumni series continues today with a postcard from abroad – Alumni Emma Sheehy graduated from BATD in 2011 and is now based in New York (lucky for some!). Emma shares a little of her day to day life with us here:

Tell me a little bit about your background – how did you come to textiles and where has it led you?

I was always very creative and very interested in fines arts at school-mostly painting and drawing. A family member suggested Textiles to me when in high school and it really grabbed my interest. Once I started my degree in textiles I realized how much it really covered in surface design and it exposed me to many more wonderful areas of art and craft, which will be a passion for life- from knitting and painting to patchwork quilting!

My degree in Textile Design bought me to New York City where I did a fashion internship for Sachin and Babi and was able to work at Mercedez Benz Fashion week as well as learn all the in’s and out’s of a New York fashion house. I found myself getting to visit fashion studios from Vogue – Oscar De La Renta, Carolina Herrera and Tory Burch. I have now landed a great full time job for a home wares company in New York doing Textile CAD design.

How do you define your style?

My personal style is colorful, playful and sometimes childlike. I love floral and geometric and I love yarn and ink and illustration!

What does a typical working day involve?

A typical day for me involves lots of CAD design! I will have multiple projects on the go at one time for different clients so normally the majority of my days are spent designing products such as bed linen, cushions, pet beds, upholstery textiles, and towels! My days are also broken up with a lot of buyer meetings where clients come in and we talk about what they want.

What are the rewards of your job/work?

It’s very rewarding to do a job that you enjoy. I get to be creative everyday! As a graduate I have been thrown in the deep end, which is great because I really get a lot of responsibility and the freedom in this job to express my creativity. I also get to travel overseas to the trade shows in China and India to source textiles so this is a definite reward! The view from my desk is of the empire state building, which is rewarding!

Are there particular artists or designers you admire? What is it about them that you admire?

Favorite artists would be Klimt, Modigliani and Egon Schiele. I admire their use of color, linework, pattern, and overall mood. My favorite designer is the BokjaDesign Studio- a Turkish based furniture company who gives new life to beautiful bold and colorful textiles from the Silk Road.

How do you stay inspired?

Its not hard to stay inspired especially when living in such a diverse and creative hub like NYC. There is always a new gallery opening or great exhibit, artist and flea markets and just the streets of NYC itself are a huge source of inspiration from the forward fashion to the street art of hipster Brooklyn. Working in the industry also helps to keep you constantly inspired as I am always researching new trends and artists/designers.

What did you take out of your Textile Design training?

I learnt skills which I apply constantly in my job today. These include how to apply your creativity to a commercial market and all of my Adobe CAD experience is from my training. On top of this I learnt how to use your creativity to make beautiful products- from use of color to what works as a design. You are taught how to fine-tune your creativity. I have very strong practical skills as well. I learnt a lot about hand, machine, and industrial knitting, silkscreen printing, textile painting and drawing techniques, dying and other fabric craft techniques.

What was your career dream or goal when you graduated? Have your expectations changed?

When I graduated I thought I wanted to go into the direction of fashion but now that I am in home wares I find that I love it and would prefer to stay in this side of the industry. I was torn between travel and getting some industry experience so moving overseas to find work seemed like a good way to go. I thought that my dream job would be to work for a commercial design house, which I do want to do for some time, but my expectations have changed now though and I would eventually like to have my own home wares business.

DearDiary designs inspire people to feel energized in their surroundings, live positively, dream big and get creative!… the label is a complete reflection of me as a designer.

Tell me a little bit about your background – how did you come to textiles and where has it led you?

Originally my love for drawing and pattern led me to study Textile Design at RMIT. Ever since I could hold a pencil, I have been creative and crafty. I’ve always wanted to see my artwork out in the world, from making laminated bookmarks in primary school, to drawing shoe catalogues and teaching art classes. I established a small product range during my time at uni, selling hand-made home decorations made from the leftover screen printing scraps I had from projects. This was simply a creative outlet to experiment and express my ideas, but one of my goals was always to open my own product and pattern licensing label.

After finishing the BA Textile Design degree, I was employed by a leading sleepwear and underwear company as a graphic artist, which designs under many large Australian retailer brands. Along side working, this year I am launching my own label of stationery and décor products, Dear Diary Design, it reflects my true aspirations, love for vibrant colour and showcases my playful design aesthetic.

My designs are very youthful and light hearted. I love to play with bright colours, create characters and tell a story in my patterns. Some of my creative inspiration includes retro patterns (obsessed), today’s technology (can’t live without), quirky characters (can tell a good story) motivational quotes (keep you on track), traveling the world (never-ending wish list) and of course, bright colours! I will get up early and travel to the office, I will work on new yardage prints for the client presentations coming up, I might also work on packaging, brochures or colour matching during the day. On my way home, I’ll squeeze in a gym session and its back to work…but this time I’m in my studio at home. The first thing I do when I get home is check and respond to all my emails, then I will make sure any orders for my products are all ready to post the following day (in my lunch break), then I will work on marketing material, trend forecasting or even drawing some new pattern ideas. The past six months I have been preparing for DESIGN:MADE:TRADE mostly though!

I can honestly say that I love all my jobs! At my full time job I love being able to work on yardage prints for men, women’s and especially kids. I love searching on Stylesight for new trends and pattern ideas. The part I love most about running Dear Diary Design, is that I can truly be myself and design in my style, make my own decisions in regards to the end look of the product. I also enjoy the satisfaction of having a label that is completely built up from my hard work, and seeing people’s delightful reaction to the products.

I run the instagram, pinterest, facebook pages and newsletter for both my own business and our house brands at my full time job. They are so important and can benefit the company immensely once the ground work has been completed. I manage newsletters through mailchimp, and Pinterest/Instagram/Facebook I will often manage from my i-phone. I use plenty of hashtags to draw attention and make sure all the platforms are linked together.

I admire many local designers from Australia that are my inspiration to keep motivated and do what I love. Emily Green, has developed her brand so much, and I like to look at how she promotes her products and brand identity. I have become friends with other local designers on instagram and we all help each other because we are at similar stages of building our own labels, some of these designers are MissPaperie, Saraihomewares and Lavieboheme Design.

At work I can use Stylesight and research brands and blogs, but I also look at home magazines like RealLiving and Inside Out, and read design books written by inspiring professionals in the industry. This year in September I am going on a trip to Paris and London, whilst there I’ll be visiting the textile trade shows Premiere Vision and INDIGO, and also TopDrawer gift fair!

A second year collaborative project – Thank you to Amanda Magnano and Tyson Stephens for putting together this blog post about the Araluen collaboration – Emma Lynas & Luise Adams

The final CATD / Textile Studio project for 2012 was developed to give us a different kind of design experience and broaden our outlook on what a textile designer can do in the community.

The project started with an activity called ‘Meet Me In The Middle’, we were each partnered with an Araluen artist and given the freedom to paint, draw and collage without a formal brief. It was a unique and positive experience, allowing us to witness the artists in action, work alongside them and get to know them a little better over tea and biscuits. We used the artwork we created during the activity to develop pattern repeats and engineered designs suitable to be digitally printed, cut and sewn to create limited edition sets consisting of a tea towel and apron. Working with the Araluen artists allowed us to explore design practice in a more intuitive social way, devoid of commercial trends and financial implications.

After our studio experience, we were able to self nominate for management, production and media teams to bring our ideas into functional, usable and pleasurable products. Our project management team helped to troubleshoot any potential issues and arranged with the VET fashion program to use their facilities (a big thanks to Mandy, Sharon and Cherry for helping us out here). The prepress team worked closely with Janelle (our Technical Officer) to put the new digital printer through its paces. The printed linen was passed onto the production team to be marked, cut, sewn and ironed into the final product. Meanwhile, the packaging team printed and put together 4 different types of packaging for the apron and tea towel sets. Throughout this process the media team took photos and video for marketing purposes and the BATD blog.

Compared to other projects, this one focused more on the experience of design and opened our eyes to other career opportunities outside of the commercial sector. The project was also a great way to bring the class together to brainstorm, develop a concept, prototype and make the product.
